OUR PROCESS: TEN STEPS TO GET TO YOU
Like any artist will tell you, creating art is a journey. The destination is full of wrong turns and new discoveries, and the creation of every piece from the Myra Scott Textile collection is no different. Let us paint a picture of the steps it takes to get from ideation to your beautiful living space.
STEP ONE: GATHER INSPIRATION
From Amish hay stooks thoughtfully lined in a field, to the intricate details in a vintage hand knotted rug, designer Myra Scott gathers inspiration from her everyday experiences in nature and in life. Once the inspiration is imprinted in her mind, Myra envisions (usually while she should be sleeping) how the idea could be arranged as a repeat in a textile.
STEP TWO: CREATE THE ART
Myra breaks out her sketch book and begins doodling out the ornate design with pencil, then finalizing the sketch with pen when she has something she would like to bring forward to the carving stage.
STEP THREE: TRANSFER DESIGN TO BLOCK
Most of Myra Scott’s textiles are created using a block printing process. A lino block is carved with various metal carving tools to create a stamp that can transfer ink to the paper. More recently, Myra has outsourced her wood carvings to artisans in India.
STEP FOUR: STAMP IT OUT
Black ink is carefully rolled onto the block, and then stamped onto paper. This process happens hundreds of times to get enough well stamped blocks to create an interesting and uniquely varied pattern.
STEP FIVE: DIGITIZE
Stamped images are scanned into an editing program. Hours of work go into digitally erasing all backgrounds so only artwork remains.
STEP SIX: DETERMINE REPEATS & COLOURWAYS
Based on timeless, muted and earth-inspired colours, and how the collection presents as a whole, Myra plays around with colour pairings and families with a goal of delighting the eyes (and maybe, fluttering the heart). Repeats are created, sometimes with painstaking difficulty and precision, so that the fabric will work well for a variety of applications. A lot of thought goes into how the scale, colours and textures will marry with other fabrics in the collection.
STEP SEVEN: SAMPLING
Files are uploaded to our printing partner and are digitally printed to fabric. Samples are then received and scrutinized for colour, saturation, patterns, and tested for overall appeal.
STEP EIGHT: CORRECTING & ADJUSTING
Although some fabrics are considered a success in the first round of sampling, most need to be corrected and adjusted to meet our studio’s high standards. Myra works to make any adjustments needed, often resampling several times before she is happy to present the product to the world.
STEP NINE: PRINTING & SEWING
With the files finalized, our printer runs yardage for our customer samples and orders. Our skilled seamstresses carefully cut and sew any orders to our exacting standards. Each order is then screened for quality before being packaged with love, and shipped to you.
STEP TEN: IN YOUR HANDS & IN OUR HEARTS
After the sampling and lead time, you have your custom made art on fabric, ready to add story and conjure up more joy in the space you so thoughtfully designed. And an important part of this step we must share: we do a little happy dance each and every time we see a Myra Scott Textile product in one of your stunning projects!
